Gaillardia aristata Arizona Sun

Gold Medal Approved Novelty

Gaillardia aristata 'Arizona Sun' is an outstanding new perennial variety, which will produce a profusion of large striking flowers in the first year of sowing. This compact and uniform perennial produces masses of fiery orange-red blooms tipped by a ring of rich flame yellow from June to September each year. These qualities ensured that it secured its rightful place in the parade of Fleuroselect Gold Medal winners. Gaillardia aristata 'Arizona Sun' is wonderful as an annual bedding plant, as well as a perennial. It is excellent for use in sunny borders where its beautiful colour combination will create impact and will attract butterflies. Use 'Arizona Sun' to create spectacular container plantings too. Being salt tolerant and low in maintenance makes it an attractive choice for seaside plantings.

Gaillardia aristata Arizona Sun is also the recipient of the All-America Selections award for performance in North American trials.

In Detail

Gaillardia aristata belongs to the Compositae or Asteraceae family. Aster means "star" in Greek, in tribute to the arrangement of the flowers in the heads. The plant was named in honour of the French botanist, Gaillard de Marentoneau and the species name, aristata, means "bearded," in reference to the bristles of the receptacle. The species is native to the crescent of dry grasslands that stretch from the Prairie Provinces of Canada to Arizona. Gaillardia aristata goes by the common names of Firewheel or Blanket flower, since its striking three-coloured flower resemble the colours found in Indian blankets. Its central disks look like big, brown eyes, hence the common name of Brown-eyed Susan. Traditionally, Indians used it as a cure for all kinds of medical ailments.
