Background information

Echinacea purpurea (eastern purple coneflower or purple coneflower) is a species of flowering plant in the genus Echinacea of the family Asteraceae. It is native to eastern North America. The generic name comes from the Greek word for hedgehog (echinos) inspired by the spiky projections in the centre of its flower head in the seed stage. The specific epithet purpurea refers to the purple colour of the flowers (most common colour in the wild). Unable to grow in the shade, it thrives in either dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought once established.
