Gazania splendens Mini Star Tangerine

Gold Medal

This unique variety awarded a Gold Medal in 1985 bears elegant, daisy-like flowers, light orange in colour in great profusion immediately above the foliage. The flowers are 6-7 cm in diameter and the serrated leaves are dark green on the upper side and attractively silvered on the reverse. They form ball-shaped cushions 18-20 cm in height. Mini Star Tangerine is easy to grow and has numerous uses in beds and containers. It is adaptable to a wide range of conditions.

Mini Star Tangerine is also the recipient of the All-America Selections award for performance in North American trials.

Use

Flowering all through the summer with new flowers produced above the old ones continuously, Mini-Star Tangerine is ideal for extended bedding displays in parks, but also superb for planting in small groups in mixed borders, window boxes, patios and tubs or as a splash of summer colour in a dry spot like the rockery.

Market Value

Growers can obtain marketable plants within 4 months. The first flower shows within 4 months on time for spring sales with an excellent presentation on a short stem. The small, fleshy leaves are narrow and strongly sinuate or notched. The leaves are dark green on the upper side and covered with a silvery down on the underside making the plants attractive even before they start flowering. Amateur gardens can easily grow the plants themselves.

Background information

In their natural home, sunny South Africa Gazanias are mostly perennial, but they can only stand a little frost. Depending on the latitude or the winter climate they may therefore either be used as annuals, sown in the winter and planted out in spring or as biennials sown in late summer and planted out in winter. The final location should always be warm and sunny.
