Delphinium Centurion Sky Blue

Gold Medal

Centurion Sky Blue is the first Delphinium to be awarded the Fleuroselect Gold Medal. The name gives away the fact that this is a sizeable Delphinium (90-120 cm high) with heavenly blue flowers. This first year flowering perennial is not only a real eye-catcher in the border, but also a fabulous cut flower for those sumptuous summer bouquets. Moreover, because of its uniformity professional growers will find this Delphinium an excellent choice.

In detail

Delphinium belongs to the family of Ranunculaceae and originates in Europe, Asia and North America. Both annual and perennial forms are known. The striking characteristic of the hybrid (Delphinium x cultorum) is the giant flower-laden spike on a long straight stem making this form extremely suitable for use by professional growers of summer cut flowers. It is certainly however, popular with growers of perennials and of course with garden enthusiasts. Centurion Sky Blue is the newest variety, awarded the Fleuroselect Gold Medal for its beauty and strong, beautiful flower spikes. Its suitability for perennial garden as well as for professional cut flower cultivation make it a welcome addition to the assortment. As a perennial this Roman Warrior will conquer its own place in a modern city garden, a cottage garden or in a traditional Victorian setting. As a cut flower, Centurion Sky Blue is an extremely attractive accent in Summer Bouquets, especially impressive in large flower arrangements. Its strong, compact flower spikes with duplex flowers and thick texture make Centurion Sky Blue last remarkably long. Delphinium is often bought as a young plant, but hobby gardeners should not miss the opportunity to grow this variety from seed. Sow the seed in trays and cover lightly. Keep the trays at 25 °C for 3-4 days and then for a few days at approx. 15°C. In a greenhouse the seed should emerge within 11-15 days. Transplant the seedlings in pots or multi-trays when large enough to handle. Keep temperature at 10-15°C (50-60°F ). The seedlings can be planted out after the frosts in a sunny spot in the garden spaced at 30 cm. Already in August, but primarily in June/July of the following year, Centurion Sky Blue will stand guard in its light blue uniform, repeating this again at the end of the summer with a magnificent second flowering. It will prove year in year out, why it has been chosen as a Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner by the international organisation Fleuroselect.
