Gold Medal Approved Novelty

Dahlia cultivars sel® Dalaya Yogi is the master of garden meditation. 'Dalaya Yogi' will use its karma to charm gardeners with dark seductive centres and its exceptionally longer flowering season. This early flowering, medium vigorous, mildew tolerant Dahlia is an alluring new addition to the current range of cutting-raised garden Dahlias.

In detail

At the Fleuroselect trials the expert judges voted this gorgeous garden Dahlia as the newest cutting-raised Gold Medal winner. The variety showed that it produces strong, fully floriferous, medium sized plants which when planted out in containers grab attention, not just for a short period, but a full season. Growers and retailers visiting the trials already fell for Dalaya Yogi's charming pink flowers with their contrasting dark centres and the judges rewarded this top Dahlia breeding with a Fleuroselect Gold Medal.

Market Value

Dahlia 'Dalaya Yogi' is a medium growing Dahlia cultivar with a great potential. The grower can successfully produce strongly floriferous, sturdy plants from cuttings in 8 – 10 weeks following a straight forward scheme of topping and pinching requiring no growth regulation. The retailer will have an eye-catcher on the shelf while the consumer cannot fail to enjoy the wonderful captivating colours in a container prominently placed on the sunny patio. The flowers will bloom continuously not just in flushes, which means that 'Dalaya Yogi' will give excellent value and an all-season performance. The Dalaya series, which also contains Dalaya 'Shari', a cream and pink variety with a yellow centre, has one final big plus: Powdery Mildew Tolerance!

Background Information

Dahlia is named after the Swedish botanist Ander Dahl. Dahlia is a genus of bushy tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America and Columbia and there are at least 36 different species. Dahlias originally arrived in Europe via Madrid at the end of the 18th Century. From the few plants surviving the journey from Mexico, crossings were made and since 1813 commercial plant breeders have been breeding Dahlias to produce many thousands of brightly coloured cultivars. 'Dalaya Yogi' is the latest Dahlia to dazzle in this illustrious group of highly successful garden plants. Modern Dahlia hybrids perform most successfully in well-watered yet free-draining soils, in spots receiving plenty of sunlight.
