In detail

Coreopsis grandiflora is from the Compositae (daisy) family and native to the USA where they still grow in sunny situations in meadows and at roadsides. It goes by the common name of Tickseed. The Coreopsis takes its name from the resemblance of its seeds to a koris, or bug. The other generic name by which these plants are known, Calliopsis, means "beautiful flower," or "lovely eye”. There are many sorts of Coreopsis in cultivation. In 1989 Coreopsis grandiflora 'Early Sunrise' successfully broke into the market as the first Coreopsis that could be sold in packs and was awarded the Fleuroselect Gold Medal. This paved the way for the popularity for Coreopsis. In recent years, breeders have come up with other award winning innovations such as 'Heliot' and 'Unwins Gold'.
