Alcea rosea (Common Hollyhock) is an ornamental plant in the Malvaceae family. It was imported into Europe from China in the sixteenth century. William Turner, an herbalist of the time, gave it the name holyoke from which the English name derives. One of the most typical cottage garden plants, it was popularised in 19th Century England and has remained a favourite ever since, with its popularity gaining steadily around the world, particularly in cooler climates. A traditionally biennial variety, the introduction of dwarf, annual varieties has opened up new opportunities for this classical flowering beauty. The 'Spring Celebrities' series was first introduced in 2009 and now comprises seven colours, including 'Spring Celebrities Crimson', even more compact than the rest of the series and with a plant and flower quality that truly impressed the Fleuroselect judges in the 2010 trials.
