Delphinium consolida Sydney Blue Picotee

Gold Medal

After 'Sydney Purple' in 2000, 'Sydney Pink' in 2002 and 'Sydney Lilac' in 2003,'Sydney Blue Picotee' is the newest Gold Medal winning Delphinium for 2007. 'Sydney Blue Picotee' adds a unique colour combination to this very successful series: White with an attractive sky-blue edge. In addition, like the other Sydney's, it offers vertical branching, earliness and uniformity. Like the rest of the Sydney series, Blue Picotee is a perfect Delphinium for greenhouse cultivation.

In Detail

Delphinium consolida 'Sydney Blue Picotee' is outstanding because of the special colour combination of the flower. While the heart of the flower is white, the edges blend into the azure. This cut flower was awarded a 2007 Gold Medal because of this eye-catching colour scheme. This colour combination is a very interesting addition for Delphinium consolida. It is true that this assortment already includes a few varieties that, as far as the flowers are concerned, do come close to the 'Sydney Blue Picotee'. However, those show a much wilder growth habit and therefore lack the uniformity that is so very important for cut flowers. Furthermore, the colours of those varieties tend to fade. As the name already indicates, 'Sydney Blue Picotee' is part of the Sydney-series. The series is pre-eminently suitable for cut flowers because of its vertical branching. Moreover, varieties from this series are uniform and can be cultivated extremely well in the controlled conditions of a greenhouse. As previous Gold Medals demonstrate, the Sydney series signify an important leap forward for the cultivation of cut flowers. 'Sydney Purple' was awarded gold in 2000. In 2002 and 2003 that same award went to 'Sydney Pink' and 'Sydney Lilac' respectively. According to reports, there will be more Sydneys. This will make this series increasingly more substantial. In time, this growing series should be able to fully complete with the top of the other cut delphiniums.
